Guest Posted October 28, 2006 Share Posted October 28, 2006 please help this unit is driving me to dispair !!!!!!. any suggestions with the following will be highly appreciated. ke 20 the role of play in conceptual development ke 21 the types of concepts in the range such as shap, position, size and quantity. ke 22 why some concepts may be difficult for children to understand. ke 32 when and how sensitive adult intervention is needed to help extend and deveeloop childrens imaginative play and awareness of the disruptive potential of such intervention. If we just look at shape, I think the significant concepts a young child will be learning about through play are: * how shapes look different according to where you are, eg a familiar person being near to or far away from, the baby/child. Also different views such as from the front, back, side or top. Playing with objects and shapes will promote the understanding that the object is the same even though it can look different! Also connected with this idea is the way babies think along the lines of "out of sight out of mind", ie if an object/shape falls out of sight, they seem to think it no longer exists. This is of course changes as the child develops and has more concrete experiences. As they become more mobile, they search out objects and shapes which are located in the space around them, and they learn more about the near/far concepts, and other positional ideas. * This concept of how far apart things are is also supported by play with blocks and construction kits. Children often enjoy taking things apart and putting them back together, arranging and rearranging puzzles pieces, etc. *Another concept about shape is about the properties of 2D and 3D shapes (sides, corners, whether or not they fit together with no gaps, whether or not you can balance one of top of another, etc). Lots of play with manufactured and natural materials will allow children to develop their understand of shape and space. * Looking at the concept of position, you could think about the child's developing skills in movement play, such as climbing up the steps of a slide and seeing the world from a different view, waving ribbons and scarves to music, negotiating a path between other people and objects when using a bike, etc. Hope this gives you some starting points Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
