Training And Nvq Support

Hello Everyone! :D

I'm Becky and I teach, assess and internally verifier NVQ Level 3 in Early Years Care and Education. I'm also starting to run a Classroom Assistants NVQ in September.

This area of the forum, is for those of you who are currently training, or wish to train but would like advice in which courses are best etc. My main experience obviously lies with the NVQ system, however I am happy to discuss and advise in any other training areas where I can too, and I'm sure lots of you know about particular courses etc.

I have just started an Open University Degree Course, so if anyone is also doing this or wants more info - just ask! :)

Hi Becky,

Just found this forum whilst looking for help for my NVQ 3 in early years childcare and education, there does not seem to be much info on the net that you can use, I started in January and have completed units C10, C11 and C15 and I am currently working on (hopfully nearly finished ) units P2, M7 and C16 :o

Finding it ok so far but getting a little tedius at time (cross referencing etc!)

Any help or sugestions are always gratfully received.

Hi Tracy,

Welcome :D

I completed my NVQ 3 three years ago and know what you mean about cross-referencing; it drove me nuts!

In the end I persuaded my tutor to let me treat each unit separately and to scrap the referencing altogether. The downside was that I had then to include multiple copies of stuff I had referred to in each section!

Two of my staff then did the NVQ 3 over the following couple of years, and I know they had organisational problems with the cross-referencing too.

Do you get support fron the staff in your setting? Are you doing the course on day-release, night school, or some other way?

Hi Helen,

I am doing the course at night school, three of my collegues are doing it as well but we seem to be doing things at different speeds, one has not been 'in the job!' :D for very long and is struggling, was told to do level 2 at the begining but insisted that if we were doing level 3 then she would as well! ( now I think she wishes she had done level 2) the other is a little behind me, I am trying to keep on top of it all as i do not want to let it drag on i want to get it done then think about what to do next xD My supervisor is very helpful and does all the photocopying we need and sorts out all the 'documents' that we ask for. The trouble i'm finding is that our tutor/assessor changes things as we go along, she says that we need to do one thing, then desides that you need to do some more, apparently city and guilds are trying to slim down the amount of paperwork involved, but who knows, i just get on with it and hope for the best :o , anyway must stop moaning, i am enjoying it really, just need to be a little more organised!!!

Finally received word this week that I've got funding from the council to do my SVQ3 in Early years childcare and education. (The Scottish equivalent of the NVQ - exactly the same.) I go on a half day introductory session a week on Saturday. Am really excited to be starting it at last but a bit apprehensive of how I'm going to fit it in on top of everything else. :o No doubt will be asking for lots of support/advice when I start.

Good luck, Beau/Carol :D I'm sure you'll be fine. The NVQ system is not difficult content as such, it's just a different way of achieving a qualification, and it works exceptionally well for most people. Collating evidence to prove you know the stuff, and arranging visits from your assessor to watch you do the stuff is a fairly accurate description!

Hi, l'm Gina and l've been working on the NVQ3 for nearly 2 years, and can finally see a light at the end of the tunnel. l have C16 and M7 to complete and my tutor isn't being very helpful at the moment. She has assessed me on units C5, C7, C10 and C11 at the beginning of July '03 and l'm still waiting for the paperwork to come back so that l can reference up the work and my problem is that l have been funded for 2 years, biut if l fail to hand in the completed NVQ by the middle of September l will have to pay £370.00.

I'm also experiencing difficulties with M7 as l do not know if l need to complete the knowledge, understanding and skills as an assignment or if the U,K & S will be covered in the M7 long, med and short term plans that l have to provide.

I'm also not a hundred percent sure what l need to put in the long term plans, l keep getting conflicting information from different people as to what and how much info l need to put into it.

if anyone can help on any of these points, l would be gratful.

thanks.

Gina.

Hi Gina,

I've just looked up my M7 to remind myself what it was all about!

I wrote the long, medium and short term plans for my setting, and included them as 'work products'. I don't think, therefore, that you have to do additional assignments for the underpinning knowledge part. Element M.7.4 (the evaluation bit) I wrote a reflective account for, i.e. saying how we use evaluations of our children to inform future planning, etc etc. There are lots of opportunities for your assessor to observe how you implement your plans, and I remember discussing with my assessor how our plans are drawn up and monitored. So, in summary, the evidence methods for my M7 were As, Bs, Fs and Hs! Hope all this makes sense :o

One more thing....there is a good discussion on planning in the Curriculum Discussion forum, General Issues.

Thanks Helen.

I think l understand. The only thing is my assessor will not be available until beginning of September and l dont return to work until the 8th Sept and as you can appreciate we will be spending all our time settling in the new children, so my assessor wont be able to observe me with the planning stage. I'll have to see if l can complete a reflective account or maybe a witness statement from one of the staff about how the planning is done.

If you anyone can help me finish this unit in any other way l'd be really grateful.

thanks Gina.

Hi,

I have a nursery assistant who is doing NVQ level 2. I have trained NNEB students (many moons ago, 1970's actualy!!!!!) but NVQ's are new to me. Is there anything I should provide for her to help her gain the NVQ. I encourage her to implement her ideas and welcome input for planning. She has an amasing rapport with the children. We have an excellent working relationship and make a good team. I try to give her equal status with parents, children and school staff and plan the sessions to allow for her assignments and observations. I also do wittness statements but I don't know what elements she has to cover.

Any info on how to help would be much appreciated.

Anne

Your colleague is very lucky to have you :D You sound like you are offering her a great deal of support and I'm sure she appreciates it.

Presumably she has an assessor who will be visiting her from time to time and observing what she is doing? Prior to her visit, she will have discussed with your colleague the next steps in her NVQ, and what she needs to be assessed on. It would therefore be a good idea at that point, for your colleague to discuss with you any help she thinks she needs from you before the assessor's visit.

The NVQ is a very different way of working isn't it? The creation of a working file can be disconcerting, and when it comes to cross-referencing all the stuff, even more so! But that is a very personal decision, ie how to put the file together, and you don't really need to be helping there; that's what her assessor and college tutors are for. What your colleague needs is precisely what you are kindly offering; the time and space to contribute to the setting, and being given the responsibility and respect in terms of her relationships with you, the children, and the parents and carers.

Hello Everyone!

My names Ria and i've just started my NVQ3 in early years and education. I'm 19 so i've not had much experience. I work part time before and after nursery running an extended day service so working parents have somewhere safe to provide for their children. I am finding the whole thing very mind boggling as previously i have done a levels and am very used to the academic way of studying. Vocational qualifications are very different! :oxD As well as the NVQ3 i am also doing a levels in Biology and Chemistry so my time is very stretched! This site is a god send! :)

Hi Ria

I have two members of staff taking their NVQ 3 at the moment. It is very different to "normal" study and puts a lot of onus on the student. I think my two have found they need to be organised with it and thinking all the time about where they can use evidence more than once. That is, if you do a written piece for one element will it cover any other areas so that you are not duplicating stuff. It then cuts down on the work load. That, of course, takes a bit of time until you get used to what is in each unit but if you spend some time having alook through things will start to slot into place.

Good luck and keep coming back with the questions.

Linda

:o I'm taking my A1 assessors course and taking three students through their NVQ 2 TA course, but we have been told that we have to complete the course by July 19th 2004 or funding will not be available. The Cross referencing is doing my head in, I have to do it or we will not complete the course in time. All because the money was not released in time for the LEA to use it. I must be mad, I spend 12hrs a week of my own time to complete this course

Hi everyone,

I am a qualified D32/33 assessor and i will be working from home to assess students with their levels 2 & 3 NVQ in childcare and Education.

I worked for a large training company before who trains, tutors and assesses students for their NVQ, so i have experience of cross referencing etc.

I have also heard that C&G want to reduce their paperwork. (YEEEEEEHAY!) :D

The company i work for now only expect ONE folder from the students, not 11+ like some training providers! this means that the course is more holistic based.

Our observations are not strictly unit based, more dircted on what else we can get out of you! hehehehe

anyway, if anyone needs help im happy to offer my advice.....just email me

Traci xx
