Synthetic And Analytic Phonics

Im doing the GTP and I have been asked to find out the difference between synthetic and analytic phonics, and the impact of the Rose Report on teaching reading in the early years.

Can anyone explain in a nut shell the difference please?

I find it really difficult to come to grips with the differences and explain them myself although I am convinced synthetic phonics is the way to go from my own experiences teaching Jolly Phonics!

Synthetic phonics is where the focus is on putting phonemes together to create a word as in reading. Analytic is where you break a word down into component parts-you analyse the word, as in spelling. One you build up, the other you break down. I.m sure others may add more, but that is what I perceive it to be in

'a nut shell'
