Guest
Next term we are going to do a topic on bridges have anyone got any suggestions what we can do. We have said that the children can use the large and small blocks to build bridges then use small world toys to extend the activity. Read the story of three billy goats gruff. Guest
You could do it in PE with children making bridges with bodies - individually some children stand with legs apart or an arm outstretched, others go under their bridges. They could work with a partner and make bridges with hands holding ( play London Bridge is falling down). You could also use benches or other resources to make bridges for gym sessions. Here's a link to London's Bridge illustrated rhyme: http://www.enchantedlearning.com/rhymes/Londonbridge.shtml and an adapted powerpoint: http://www.wati.org/Curriculum/Literacy/pp...pt#256,1,London Bridge is Falling Down
Guest
I once did a 'challenge' activity after the children had been exposed to the concept of bridges. I supplied the materials they may need to build a bridge - ie. different lengths of wood planks and milk crates and invited the children to build their own bridge in small groups. Only assisting if they asked for it. It was brilliant to watch them moving things around and working together. I demonstrated how to test the 'bridge' using their hands to make sure it was 'safe' before they walked over it. Some of the boys in particular, really got into this. Some children did not want to build/move planks around, but loved walking over. This of course, leads very nicely into the 3 Billy Goats Gruff. Great to record what they say as they think of how to build. A visit to the science museum.
Guest
Perhaps you could you do something with lollipop sticks/dowelling of some sort and string and lots and lots of glue - not too sure what but who knows where they could take this. The dowelling, which is really cheap can easily be sawed too by the children and they love how quickly they get results from sawing. Could use large nails hammered into a plank and wrap string around them - Nikki
