Buy two or three bags of ice and put them into an empty water tray, last time we tried it the children had no idea what it was, one suggested it was pebbles!

couldn't agree more, basics and simplicity are the best, with a dash of sensory stimulation of course :D , sounds like a cocktail recipe. :(:D ( must get off party mode :oxD:( )

I watched some children play with a big tub of ice cubes and then someone added compost from another big tub. The ice cubes really did look like coal, so one little girl asked if we could wash them. It was great to use cold and warm water much to the the astonishment of one little boy when he looked into the bowl of warm water 'where's it gone?' :o The whole activity ended in 'mud'. Brilliant day :D

another good one is fill lots of large, small etc tubs/pots and place keys, animals inside or even food colouring and place in the freezer once frozen take out of pots and into trays and the children love exploring and feeling and trying to figure out (problem solving) how to get to the items...

we make huge ice moutains and place polar bears etc on top for imaginary play etc.... and show books on animals living in those conditions

also submerse a boat half in the ice hey very own shipwreck!!!
