Hot Water

Hi

First day back today, arrived to find no heating and no hot water, phoned caretaker, came in fixed the heating but water is due to be fixed next week. I just wondered if anybody knew where we stood legally, they have given us an urn in the kitchen for washing up and hot drinks, i have also filled a handwashing bowl for the children using the urn. But we have no hot water coming out of the taps at all.

I would think that you are ok legally, as in meeting the National standards because it is a temporary situation and you have actioned improvement. You have addressed the need for hand washing, although not as good as running water, it will suffice in the short term. :o

Are you full daycare or sessional? Our hot water packed up the day Environmental Health came to do a spot check visit and the thing they were most concerned about was the hygienic preparation and clearing up at mealtimes. You can get round hand washing with wipes but once food becomes an issue then you need to make sure you've got an effective action plan in place. I wouldn't worry too much though, continuity of childcare is usually the most important thing on Oftsed's mind and they will do all they can to keep you open in "adverse circumstances"!! At snacktimes, we ended up just providing pre-packed foods and cartons of juice for the couple of days when there was no hot water to save on preparation and washing up.
