Anyone run a successful after school club that they have a good knowledge of that would be willing to share ideas? I need questions answering on staffing, resources, costing, ratios etc. Thanks.

Hi

I don't run a club, but I am a development worker that does business plans and works with providers that are setting up after school provision.

The club (assuming that it runs for over 2 hours) will need to be registered with Ofsted and therefore ratios are 1 adult to every 8 children under the age of 8. You can have as many over 8s as you wish, but the care of the under 8s must not be compromised.

Staffing - you must have at least two staff for child protection purposes regardless of numbers, so you should work on creating the number of places in multiples of 8. We usually set up 16 or 24 place provision according to the demand shown by market research.

Resources - we usually recommend really basic resources to start with i.e. art and craft, construction, table top and board games. We then get the provider to give the children a budget and they choose the toys and resources they are interested in. Some after school clubs have TV, DVD or video game players. If you have a TV you need a license and if you show videos/DVDs you need an entertainment license, unless you are on a school site as they may be covered.

Basic costings include - salaries, start up equipment, catering costs, consumable equipment, admin charges, rent/heating/lighting, advertising and promotion, general repair and renewal as equipment suffers wear and tear.

Hope this helps, but feel free to PM me if you want further info...
