Guest Posted February 10, 2007 Posted February 10, 2007 Hi I want to colour some rice for next week. Can someone tell me the best way to do this. Thanks
AnonyMouse_1027 Posted February 10, 2007 Posted February 10, 2007 we just mix it and dry it off in the oven
Guest Posted February 10, 2007 Posted February 10, 2007 Thanks, i've just done a search on the internet and they are all mentioning mixing it with rubbing alcohol. which i've never heard off
AnonyMouse_1027 Posted February 10, 2007 Posted February 10, 2007 nor have i...now if your talking red wine!!!!!
Guest Posted February 10, 2007 Posted February 10, 2007 how odd! we get the children to do it. Put rice in a bowl, children choose colour and we add a drop (it doesn't take much so go carefully!) of food colouring. They mix it up then tip it onto a tray to spread out to dry. We like to do that so we get a mix of colours but obviously can just do one! We put it in the sand tray after. It grabs the colour unevenly so you get some really deeply dyed and others really pale - gorgeous
AnonyMouse_4544 Posted February 10, 2007 Posted February 10, 2007 never tried it but apparently if you add half a teaspoon of vinegar it sets the colour
AnonyMouse_3735 Posted February 10, 2007 Posted February 10, 2007 yes uncooked , we have used low oven to dry it quicker, lovely instead of sand in rainbow of colours children love it in large quantities Inge
Guest Posted February 10, 2007 Posted February 10, 2007 Have to admit, we have actually let the children put it straight into the sand tray without waiting for it to dry and we've never had a problem with it coming off on their hands... obviously I meant an empty sand tray not to mix rice in with sand
AnonyMouse_2846 Posted February 10, 2007 Posted February 10, 2007 it was one of those questions I would only have asked among friends Our children love rice in the water trough instead of water ofcourse and i have always fancied colouring it so thats what Ill do thank you
AnonyMouse_79 Posted February 11, 2007 Posted February 11, 2007 So what do the children do with it, fill and pour? Anything else?
Guest Posted February 11, 2007 Posted February 11, 2007 At ours they'd eat it too!! PS went to bed shattered at 9pm, end of half term catching up I think, and wide awake now!!Not usually on so late so good to see you're up too Susan!
AnonyMouse_2846 Posted February 11, 2007 Posted February 11, 2007 I cant sleep either waiting up for my youngest The children do the usual things they do with water it makes a lovely sound We also provide rice bowls and spoons, metal spoons, wooden spoons, pans, measuring jugs, bottles etc they love to 'cook' with it
Guest Posted February 11, 2007 Posted February 11, 2007 Never thought about putting it in a low oven. I've always got the children to do this kind of thing on a Friday afternoon and then just left it spread out on trays to dry over the weekend. We'll be having some next week with a wok and chopsticks as part of our Chinese New Year celebrations.
AnonyMouse_64 Posted February 11, 2007 Posted February 11, 2007 I love rice in the sand tray - we have it there now. It feels so lovely when you put your hands in it! Our children love to use the diggers with it too.
