Guest Posted February 18, 2007 Posted February 18, 2007 Hi, been a while since I last posted - good to be back Have just started in new post in SEN school, early years dept, after 20 years in mainstream. A big step but I am loving it . Now I'm a bit more settled I'd like to get more involved in planning, but ours seems very complicated compared to how I used to plan (apart from the obvious differences of p scale objectives etc). Wondered if anyone might be able to guide me to any useful areas in the forum. Thanks ! Anita
AnonyMouse_7317 Posted February 18, 2007 Posted February 18, 2007 Hi i found some useful info in the rescource library
Guest Posted February 19, 2007 Posted February 19, 2007 o0o0o what kind of special school are you working in? I'm currently in my 2nd year in a Primary SLD, PMLD and ASD school, after teaching for 3 years in mainstream. It's such a big change isn't it?
Guest Posted February 19, 2007 Posted February 19, 2007 Hi, I made the change almost 4 years ago now, and I love it. There doesn't seem to be much around by way of networking and support for ealry years practitioners in the SEN field, but the challenge of finding out is always motivating. Good luck in your new job, and keep enjoying it. I'm not sure any of my stuff is worth sharing, but if you have anything specific you want to pick brains on, I'm happy to try. Nic
Guest Posted February 19, 2007 Posted February 19, 2007 Thanks all for your kind wishes. The school is a primary special school for children with SPMLD and ASD's (who learn using TEACCH ). Its a really lovely happy school and the children and staff are very friendly and have welcomed me into the fold. We had ofsted during my 4th week there and had a really good result , I feel very privileged to be part of their team Certainly going to be busy, judging from the first half term! There's sooo much to learn, I feel like an NQT feeling my feet!! Its a great new challenge

My experience is preschool, I am sure someone from SEN field will respond soon to your query but in the meantime have you thought of having a chat with your local SENCO Area Advisor? He/she may know of schools with vacancies or what training (if you want it) is available in your area. Good luck with following your professional goals. Peggy

I had no specialist training (learnt so much since I started 3 years ago) but did have some experience from summer jobs and experience of ASD from having statemented children in my mainstream classes.
Guest Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 Hi I am a new member. Just finished my induction in a special school - started first two terms as a Reception Teacher in mainstream. Now teaching Yr3/4 ASD children. It has been a wonderful challenge and I am really enjoying it. I got into special by accident and then word of mouth. I have found this site by accident too - I trained as early years and KS1 - I want to retain knowledge of foundation phase so that is why I have subscribed. i am on a fixed term contract at the mo and do not know where I will end up yet. I have had a lot of luck so far!
AnonyMouse_8623 Posted April 8, 2008 Posted April 8, 2008 Hi Clanwilliams and welcome to the forum. From previous posts there seems to be a number of people like yourself who have changed from mainstream to SEN so you are definately in good company. I hope you get lots of ideas from the forum - good luck!
Guest Posted April 8, 2008 Posted April 8, 2008 Thanks for your reply. I already feel in good company. I have only had time to have a little look around but impressed so far!

Guest Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 Hi everyone. Cheers for the advice, had 2 interviews so far. In the 2nd interview came a very close second, and they created a job for me but the funding fell through!!! So hopefully third time lucky; got one in the pipeline! But I'll keep plodding on because I know its what i want to do.

Guest Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 Hello all, Read the previous posts and thought you may be able to give me some advice. I have an interview for a job at a special school, I need to teach a 15 min lesson on sensory/story/song/music to 3 pupils with profound multiple learning difficulties. All I know about them is that they will be working at P1-P3, I do not know their age. I wondered whether anyone has any ideas? I have had some experience volunteering a long time ago, but currently work in the FS in a mainstream school - this is a job I really really want so please please help! Many thanks
