Keyworkers In Fsu's

To those of you working in Foundation stage units and operating a key worker/person system - do your children stay with the same keyworker through their 2 or more years in the unit or do they change?

We are planning to work as a unit from september and have decided to have key groups made up of both age ranges, so there wouldn't be a natural change of key person from nursery to reception.

Partly feel children would benefit from continuity of same person but is it a massive wrench when they leave their key person to move up to Y1?

I'm preparing to introduce a nursery to the keyworker system too and have decided to give the children the same keyworker from the age of two until they go on to big school - I think it just makes more sense to allow a member of staff to develop a good, effective relationship with a family over as long a period as possible rather than change keyworkers half way through.

from sept to xmas we have three staff in the unit.

so we have three family groups the terrific triangles, super squares and smiley circles, each group has a key worker and they stay in this group untill they leave the unit.

Because we have four members of staff ( after xmas) we still only keep our three groups we have a teacher for squares and circles and the triangles have two nursery nurses as their keyworker. When the children go into there family groups the extra nursery nurse will carry on with the jobs in the unit.( usually still tidying up).

The keyworker will fill in the assessments and portfolios for their family group, luckily being a nursery nurse there are two of us for our group,

We 43 reception and 24 p/t each session, 91 through out the day.

Each family has 30 children, but only about 23 each session for family time. :D

We operate a keyworker system but the childen change workers when they change year groups. We felt it was important they became used to this as teachers change year to year. It also gives the children experience building relationships. As we are a F1/F2 unit with Year 1 in the same phase (we share spaces and time with Y1). The children do have contact with all staff so no one is really a stranger. We allow flexability so if children are distressed they can join their old keyworkers for certain sessions or part of a session. It works well and everyone gets to know the children.
