Pirate Song

Guest

Recommended Posts

Have just been watching a TV programme on Teachers TV and I heard a song that I would like to use but I don't know the words to.

Not sure if this is the chorus but it went -

The captain said ei ei, The captain said ei ei.

Have done a quick google but came up blank. So I thought I would try the real experts on this site.

Sounds like it could be the Jolly phonics song for ie which off the top of my head i think goes something like the captain says ie, ie the captain says ie, ie, stand up straight dont be late the captain says ie, ie

If its pirate songs you want we sang when I was one I sucked my thumb the day I went to sea, I climbed aboard a pirate ship and the captain said to me we're going this way that way forward and backward over the Irish sea, a bottle of rum to warm my tum and thats the life for me.

We sing this song, not sure if it's the one you saw:

The Captain says ie ie

The Captain says ie ie

Stand up straight and don't be late the captain says ie ie

This song is from the Jolly Songs book from Jolly phonics which comes with a CD. The book has a song for each of the 42 sounds and the tunes are all based on familar songs such as the farmers in the dell, skip to the lou etc, etc. My chn have loved these and I have found them much more simple to use than the Jolly Jingles.

This is the pirate song we sing :

When I was 1 I ate a bun (mime action)

The day I went to sea

I jumped aboard a pirate ship (cover one eye with hand)

And the Captain said to me (salute)

We're going this way, that way (sway from side to side)

Forwards and backwards (sway forwards and backwards)

Over the Irish Sea (use hand to make wave actions)

A bottle of rum (mime drinking)

To fill my tum,(rub tummy)

And that's the life for me (thumbs up)

Oy! (slap thigh like pantomime principal boy)

Verse 2

When I was 2 I buckled my shoe (mime action)

V3

When I was 3 I banged my knee (mime )

V4

When I was 4 I slammed the door (mime)

V5

When I was 5 I learnt to dive (mime)

V6

When I was 6 I learnt some tricks (!)

V7

When I was 7 I sailed from Devon (mime 'look-out')

V8

When I was 8 I jumped the gate (mime)

V9

When I was 9 I crossed the line (!)

V10

When I was 10 did it again......

The children love it, but it's quite tiring to sing, strangely!

Ever tried singing it, reading the words, whilst dressed up as a pirate with a patch over one eye? Very difficult!

Thanks I think it must be the Jolly Phonics song as JP was mentioned, thanks for the other songs as well, our children are very much into Pirates at the moment.

Mine are into pirates too. I've just begun learning to play the guitar and took it in a couple of weeks ago, Drunken Sailor is easy - only two chords, and they had lots of fun making up new verses: phone the police and put him in prison, throw him in the sea and let the sharks eat him, get some crabs and make them pinch him, take his rum away and give him water, make him walk the plank and fire the cannon, .....the list went on and on..... and fortunately they didn't notice the bum notes! :o

:oxD:( Oh AOB, isn't it great teaching reception. They think you're wonderful no matter how badly you sing, dance, play an instrument.

God love 4/5 year olds. (and their dotty teachers :( )

Hello Leslie - welcome to the Forum.

Great to have a professional storyteller on board - can you tell us more about your work (like where you are in the country, and what kind of things you get involved with).

Maz

PS Love the name!

Hello Maz,

I am based in Blackpool and am involved in oral storytelling, mostly in schools, pre-school play groups and libraries.

I also perform at Festivals, Gatherings and Storytelling Clubs.

You can find out more at my website: www.thestorytelling-resource-centre.com.

I was obliged to choose a different user name from my own when registering, and 'Popplesnitch' is a name I have occasionally used when performing (the name's origin comes from a folktale that I sometimes tell).

Leslie.

Wow! Storytelling's my favourite thing, so I'll be on your site as soon as I've got time! :o

I couldn't begin to tell you the tune, and as I haven't a musical bone in my body (although I love music!) I suppose it varies everytime I 'sing' it! I'd have to 'do' it for you....... embarrassment!!!

Hello everyone!

Just so you know, I now have "when I was 1... " stuck in my head!!

Does anyone know where I can get a copy of the Jolly songs from?

I don't know if School has one, I'll have to raid the cupboards...(currently one of my favourite things to do!) :-P

a few more pirate songs that I made up when doing Pirates a few years ago!

to the tune of 5 little ducks

5 little pirates went sailing one day

over the seas and far away

Captain Jack said you better come back

but only 4 little pirates came back

and so it continues!!

to the tune of here we go round the Mulberry Bush

add your own actions!

We are the Pirates sailing the seas

sailing the seas, sailing the seas

we are the pirates sailing the seas

On a wet and stormy morning

this is the way we scrub the deck,

scrub the deck scrub the deck

this is the way we scrub the deck

on a wet and stormy morning

this is the way we climb the rigs

climb the rigs, climb the rigs

this is the way we climb the rigs

on a wet and stormy morning

this is the way we walk the plank

walk the plank, walk the plank

this is the way we walk the plank

on a wet and stormy morning

Got this one from Scholastic many moons ago

To the tune of Here we go round the mulberry bush

We’re sailing on a Pirate Ship, pirate ship, pirate ship,

We’re sailing on a Pirate Ship right across the sea.

Pull and push on the great big wheel, great big wheel, great big wheel,

Pull and push on the great big wheel to steer us on our way.

Climb the rigging to fix the sails, fix the sails, fix the sails,

Climb the rigging to fix the sails, be careful it’s blowing a gale!

Sweep the galley to keep it clean, keep it clean, keep it clean,

Sweep the galley to keep it clean, clean and shine and gleam.

Check the storeroom and count supplies, count supplies, count supplies,

Check the storeroom and count supplies, we need some more pies!

Fire the cannon up in the sky, in the sky, in the sky,

Fire the cannon up in the sky, we’re having a jolly good time!

Drop the anchor we’ll rest tonight, rest tonight rest tonight,

Drop the anchor we’ll rest tonight and sleep right through the night.

Up on the crow’s nest keep a look out, keep a look out, keep a look out,

Up on the crow’s nest keep a look out, if you see something then just shout!

Knock knock on the captain’s door, captain’s door, captain’s door,

Knock knock on the captain’s door, ahoy! We see the shore!

We’re sailing on a Pirate Ship, pirate ship, pirate ship,

We’re sailing on a Pirate Ship right across the sea.
