The dreaded knock on the door today we only opened our pre-school in September. Its a terrible week for us as we have had some really sad news regarding one of our families and have been trying to get on top of our xmas things!! To be honest they were two really nice ladies and they are calling back on Monday. They have asked questions in general, gone through my operational plan, but i was wondering if any of you have ideas what they may want to do/know on Monday, i've no experience with Ofsted. Think i feel sick Also she wants me to develop my policy regarding an allegation being made about a staff member and show her on Monday. I am a member of PLA and they ha…

Inspection Inconsistencies?

I hear that OFSTED are often inspecting preschools on school grounds at the same time as they do the school inspection. If this becomes routine, then surely at some stage these preschools will not be having an unannounced inspection. While I'm not especially concerned about that per se, there seems to be a tendency for different standards to apply. Some preschools on school grounds, for instance, are offered free fruit & vegetables from their partner schools. Preschools located elsewhere are not eligible. And - [while I'm griping, you can tell I'm ready for the weekend!]- when will we give up the pretence that it's possible for an inspector ever to see things as…

Dear all! We will be inspected on Monday, and we were told that one of the inspectors will be focusing on the foundation stage, which is made up of a nursery and a reception class. Does anyone know which areas the inspector will be focusing on? Our topic this half term is transport and I am supposed to be teaching measure in mathematical development (heavier and lighter) any practical ideas on this matter will save my life!!!! Thanks

just thought you may like to know that there is currently new regulations being consulted on that will, if agreed, require providers to keep a log of all complaints and share them with parents. its a long story but it has been recommended that we do this from now. we do have ths log but it is not currently available for all parents and on asking I have had one say she does not want her comments revealed to the other parents as it relates only to her child and not the provision of care, which she is extremely happy with. Must go to make up a relevant document for parents and book for them to see......if only they ever looked at them!!! we are also considerin…

Surprise Ofsted

I had a shock this morning-5 mins before we were due to open our doors 2 ofsted inspectors walked in and told me they would be doing a full ofsted inspection over the next two days. When I stammered out that my pre-school had an excellent ofsted only eighteen months ago they said 'that was under the old system'. So far everything has gone smoothly and they have made lots of complimentary remarks but I shall be very glad when tomorrow is over. After being assessed for accreditation last October I did think I could relax for a year or so without worrying about inspections. I'm standing as branch chair for the local Pre-school Learning Alliance Sub-committee at the AGM o…

Hi We are a new nursery opened 10 months ago, we were due our seven month initial inspection some point in July and so we prepared and waited. Well after three months of waiting they turned up last week when we were least expecting it. - Always the way!! So it was a surprise visit! It was stressful two days even though our inspecting officer was very pleasant and laid back. My staff seemed to lose all capability and were doing things they never normally do (Nerves - they said, which I understand but even still??) The inspection went well and at our feedback I understand we received a satisfactory all over, with a lot of positives, a recognition that there is w…

I've looked on Ofsted's web site to see if I can get a copy of the inspection form thats used, I'm helping playgroup to prepare, but for some members of staff a real inspection format would be more useful. I've seen the amended standards and 'how we work' stuff but thought there might be something else. Can anyone direct me to it?

Just wanted to share this with you all. We had our combined inspection from the Care Commission and HMIe today. They gave us great feedback at the end and heaps of praise for what we were doing. They inspected us on 5 different standards and we got v. good or good for all of them(v. good being the highest). The points of recommendation were all things we had included in our development plan. I'm so delighted that it's over and that the feedback was so positive. I'll be having a big glass of wine tonight.
