  1. Hi H,

I can't help you with regard to what Tapestry is like to use for real, but having made some of it I can answer a few of your questions.

    • Tapestry is web based so it can be used anywhere with an internet connection. You can use a tablet or phone to submit observations but most of the interaction with Tapestry is done through a web browser.
    • The latest big update introduced the analysis system, which among other things allows you to track progress.
    • PRAMS and Tapestry are completely separate systems, there's no need to use both unless you require features that exclusively available in each. We might introduce some form of connection between the two in the future, probably in the form of a method to transfer data from one to the other.

Hopefully someone will come along and give you the benefit of their practical experience.

  2. Hi bebeau, congratulations on making your first post. I see you've followed it up swiftly with a second.

Unfortunately I can't provide you access to PRAMS or Tapestry in the wild, but hopefully somebody will. I can, however, set you up with access to a test Tapestry system so that you can have a play around with it. The data in the system isn't real but it will give you an idea of how it all works. Let me know if you're interested.

  3. Happy birthday everyone.

Although I've not been here anywhere near the whole time since the FSF started, I couldn't have asked for a better place to work, or nicer people to work for. It's been great to create something that makes life easier for so many people and to be part of such a wonderful community.

  4. Hi Becky,

As Sue says, PRAMS is perfectly safe to download, it's just that some internet security systems are rather paranoid. The one included in Internet Explorer 9 is particularly problematic since it treats all software as a potential threat until it has been downloaded a large number of times or you pay an extortionate amount of money to bypass the process. Anyway, rant over.

Java is a programming language and was used to write PRAMS. In order to run Java programs your computer needs to have a system installed called the Java Runtime Environment (JRE). This is what you were asked to install when PRAMS was installing. Literally billions of devices have a JRE installed on them worldwide, it is perfectly safe. On Windows the JRE takes up 126MB of disk space. PRAMS 2 takes up about 5MB.

PRAMS 2 has indeed been updated to support the revised EYFS framework alongside the original one. You just need to select the appropriate version (by default the new one) when you create an assessment period.

  5. Since you're using a proxy server that requires a username and password, PRAMS keeps these details in an encrypted file that needs a password to open it. When you first set up the proxy server authentication options you were asked to enter a password to use for this. Subsequently, when you run PRAMS, you need to enter this password so that PRAMS can open the file and authenticate with the proxy server. If you haven't entered a password yet, just choose one and remember it. If you've entered a password, just enter that again when you run PRAMS. If you don't know what password you entered you'll need to delete the PRAMS configuration files and set up the options again, here's how to do that:

Hold down the Windows key (between Ctrl and Alt) and press R, a small box should appear that says "Run" in its title bar. Enter this text, without quotes, into the box: "%APPDATA%" . Click "OK" and a Windows Explorer window should open. In here you should find a folder called "PRAMS" . In this folder delete the files "options.bin" and proxyAuthenticationOptions.bin" . When you start PRAMS again you can enter your options again with a new password.

  6. You are probably connected to the internet using a proxy server, which you need to tell PRAMS about so it can get through it. You need to find out your proxy's IP address and port from whoever is responsible for managing your network. Also you need to find out if it uses authentication and, if it does, the username and password for it. Then you can enter these details into PRAMS by clicking "Options" and ticking "Connect through a proxy server".

  7. Ah wow, thanks Steve for bringing this to my attention, and thankyou all for the lovely messages. Just back from a lovely evening at the imaginatively named "The Pub". Had a pretty good day, saved up the enojyable work especially.

I'm not surprised you didn't see me Sue, I was far too drunk for mere humans to observe.
